Gamers duped by Labor’s R18+ rating - Liberals oppose Nanny State censorship

Attorney-General John Rau‟s announcement in April to introduce an R18+ rating will leave many adult gamers disappointed with Labor‟s position. more censorship rather than less.

"Gamers have been led to believe that they will soon have an R18+ rating in South Australia," Shadow Attorney-General Stephen Wade said today. "However, it appears Mr Rau‟s proposal will do little more than reclassify MA15+ games as R18+."

Writing to Members of Parliament in April, Mr Rau outlined Labor‟s plan to abolish MA15+ ratings and lists the proposed content levels for each classification. The list does not include the „high‟ content category of the film classification regime, implying that „high‟ and „very high‟ content material will continue to be refused classification.

This regime is more conservative than the Atkinson model – it means that „strong‟ content currently available from 15 will now only be available from 18 and there will be no greater access to „high‟ and „very high‟ content.

"Labor is simply renaming and restricting classification of „strong‟ content for computer games," Mr Wade said.

"Gamers who breathed a sigh of relief after former Attorney-General Michael Atkinson was dumped will be rightly disappointed that Mr Rau is actually taking a backwards step by introducing

"The SA Liberal Party is committed to introducing a fully fledged classification regime that provides parents with the clear information they need to protect children, while allowing adults to access adult content in game form.

"Parents need to know what is appropriate for their children. That‟s why it is a recipe for confusion to introduce a different classification system just for computer games," Mr Wade said.

"Mr Rau and Labor have resorted to treating adults like children. Some of the content banned in these games such as sexual content is easily accessible to consenting adults in real life."
