Labor hides report on crime

The Rann Labor Government has failed to release a report by one of its own Thinkers in Residence into the South Australian justice system that is set to strongly criticise Labor’s approach to law and order.

The report, by Thinker in Residence Judge Peggy Hora has been shrouded in secrecy since it was finalised nearly four months ago.

Judge Hora has been critical of the Rann Labor Government’s approach to law and order particularly criticising their “rack ‘em, pack ‘em and stack ‘em” policy.

Shadow Attorney-General, Stephen Wade said that the Rann Labor Government should reveal what its own “thinker” thought about SA’s criminal justice system.

“The Rann Labor Government is picking and choosing what information South Australians can have access to as it suits them,” Mr Wade said.

“They are not accountable, there is no openness and there is no transparency.

“After spending millions of taxpayer dollars on the Thinkers of Residence program the Rann Labor Government owes it to South Australians to immediately release these findings.

“In her final address on 20 April last year, Judge Hora said that she would be making recommendations and submitting written documents “over the next month or so”. Now, eight months later, there has been no public release.

“The Opposition understands that Judge Hora’s report was finalised months ago and will repudiate the Rann Labor Government’s approach to law and order - they don’t like the verdict so they won’t make it public.

“It is in the public interest that this information is immediately released. It is not for the State Government to be deciding what information South Australians should have access to.

“The Rann Labor Government should release the report and let the South Australian community come to their own view on its recommendations,” Mr Wade said.
