Services cut as tough talk on fines revealed as more spin

Law-abiding South Australians are paying for the Labor Government‟s appalling performance on fines enforcement, according to Shadow Attorney General Stephen Wade. 1 since 2008-2009.

The latest Auditor-General report revealed that outstanding fines went up 24 per cent over the 2010-11 financial year from $155 million to $192 million.

At the same time, $111 million of outstanding fines have been written off since January 2010.

Shadow Attorney General Stephen Wade said the blow out in outstanding fines in the last financial year alone could have funded the cut to the Bicentennial Conservatory 1,000 times over.

"Despite almost two years of tough talk from Attorney General Rau fines enforcement continues to go from bad to worse," Mr Wade said.

"The number of Fines Payment Unit order for sale arrest warrants issued has increased by more than 150 per cent

"The rate of successful execution of Fines Payment Unit warrants has fallen by a third over the past two years – from 61 per cent to 43 per cent.

"In the 2010 Budget, the Labor Government said it was pumping millions of dollars into the Fines Payment Unit. Attorney General Rau told Parliament that this money would fund a SWAT-team style team and that fine defaulters should be „very fearful‟ because the Government was „very serious‟.

"But almost a year after Labor announced a review, there is still no outcome.

"Labor‟s lack of commitment and sloppy approach to fines enforcement is simply unjust to the thousands of South Australians who pay their fines on time."
