Anniversary of another broken promise on health

On the 3rd anniversary of the Weatherill Government’s promise to build a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital the State Liberals are demanding that Health Minister Jack Snelling provides an update on the status of project.

On this day three years ago Jay Weatherill promised a new $600 million Women’s and Children’s Hospital would be built within a decade.

Three years later there are no plans, no expressions of interest, no money in the forward estimates and no chance of the Weatherill Government delivering this election promise in the next seven years.

“Is the promised new Women’s and Children’s Hospital another Labor policy hoax designed to win them an election and then cynically shelved after the votes are counted?” asked Shadow Health Minister Stephen Wade.

“Or has the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital been abandoned because the $640 million budget blow-out on the new Royal Adelaide Hospital means the coffers are bare?

““Labor went to last state election having promised to ‘never ever’ close the Repat.

“Yesterday it chose ACH to replace the RSL as the developer who will take over millions of dollars of public health assets at the Daw Park site.

“Labor went the last state election promising the upgrade Adelaide’s hospital network and has since announced plans to close three hospitals and downgrade Modbury, TQEH and Noarlunga emergency departments.

“Labor promised that the new Royal Adelaide Hospital would be open in April this year and we now know it won’t open until April next year the earliest.

“Labor also claimed in March 2015 that the re-location of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital would be brought forward.

“The massive budget blow-out on the cost of nRAH is driving budget cuts throughout South Australia’s public health system.

“Jack Snelling needs to tell South Australians what are the actual plans for the promised new hospital.”
