Call for Health Minister to address Repat rally

A rally will be held on the steps of Parliament House this morning to protest against the Weatherill Labor Government’s plan to close the Repatriation General Hospital.

Almost 13,500 South Australians have already signed an online petition calling on the Weatherill Labor Government to abandon its plan to close the iconic Repat Hospital.

Mr John Schumann OAM – singer, songwriter and veterans’ advocate – and Bob Ellis OAM, Vietnam Veteran and retired Major, will be key speakers at the rally.

“I would urge the Minister for Health, Jack Snelling, to take this opportunity to explain exactly why he is going to close the Repat,” said Shadow Health Minister Stephen Wade.

“The Health Minister will find a group passionate about saving the Repat and if he is confident his decision is the right one he should take this opportunity to put his case.

“The State Liberals believe veterans and the wider community should not have to pay for Labor’s mismanagement of the health system with the closure of the Repat hospital.

“The closure of the Repat Hospital will not only disadvantage South Australian veterans, it would also have serious, negative and long-term impacts for the health of the broader community, particularly people living in the southern suburbs.

“The closure of the Repat could see Flinders Medical Centre overwhelmed by a flood of work currently being done at the Repat.

“Last year, 25 per cent of all orthopaedic and urological elective surgery performed in Adelaide was done at the Repat – Flinders did less than 3 per cent.

“Flinders will also receive thousands of emergency patients from Noarlunga.

“The rally today will show that opposition to the Government’s breach of faith concerning the Repat goes far beyond the returned service men and women and their families.”
