Transforming Health turns a terrible two

On the second anniversary of the release of Transforming Health the State Liberals are calling on the Weatherill Government to abandon its dangerous downgrading of Adelaide’s hospital network.

The Weatherill Government announced Transforming Health with the slogan ‘best care the first time every time'.

“After two years Transforming Health has failed to deliver on its self-declared objectives,” said Shadow Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade.

“Transforming Health has seen Modbury, TQEH and Noarlunga hospitals’ emergency departments downgraded, increasing the risk to patient safety without producing any budget savings.

“Two years after the Weatherill Government announced it would break its solemn promise to never ever close the Repat it is still unable to detail where the elective surgery currently undertaken at the Repat will be performed.

“Two years ago the Weatherill Government announced Modbury Hospital would become ‘a new dedicated centre for elective eye surgery’ it is still unable to detail where that eye surgery will take place despite having abandoned plans for a dedicated centre at Modbury 16 months ago.

“Two years ago the Weatherill Government announced patients seeking treatment at the Lyell McEwin Hospital will receive ‘quicker decisions by experienced staff, faster testing and results, and therefore swifter treatment’.

“Today Lyell McEwin has SafeWork SA improvement notices against it as a result of its understaffed Emergency Department being overwhelmed by patients diverted from Modbury.

“Two years ago the Weatherill Government promised ‘South Australia's Ambulance Service will be boosted by more than 70 additional paramedics and support staff and 12 new ambulances as part of proposals from Transforming Health’.

“Today not one of those additional ambulances or staff have been delivered despite ambulance response times for metropolitan emergency cases have blown out by 9 per cent in the past year.

“Doctors, nurses and patients have all voiced their concerns about the impact of Transforming Health on patient safety – it’s time the Weatherill Government listened.”
